CONVENTIONAL NARRATIVE

At age 11, Helen Keller wrote the story 'The Frost King' as a gift for Perkins School director Michael Anagnos. When she was accused of plagiarizing Margaret Canby's 'Frost Fairies,' Anagnos held a formal investigation and ruled it 'unconscious plagiarism' by a young genius.

"He believed Helen was unconscious in her plagiarism from Miss Canby, but he changed his mind... after the $1,600 she raised him by that tea."

LOGICAL REBUTTAL & AUDIT VERDICT

The 'unconscious plagiarism' defense was a financial survival tactic. The Perkins School and the handlers had a direct financial incentive of $1,600 (equivalent to ~$60,000 today) to maintain the public image of a miracle child. Insiders knew and admitted that the work was plagiarized, but the revenue and status generated by the myth dictated a cover-up.
